(Inter-) National Technology Policies

How is the development of different technologies promoted or hindered by policy makers on a national or international level? There are plenty of empirical examples of (inter-)national technology policy making to answer these questions. They cover the range from historic studies from Wernher von Braun or the history of German space travel since 1945 as well as current studies concerning the risk assessment of future technology projects like the Transrapid or (inter-)national energy policies.

Theoretically, we draw on the idea of ‘domain politics’: the actions of policy makers –regardless whether those are individuals or corporate actors like organisations - are affected by self-interest to protect and expand their own discretion. Hence, the idea of ‘domain politics’ allows to explain the political logic underlying the actions and decisions of governmental actors even in the case of obviously irrational decisions concerning large-scale projects (for example the International Space Station ISS).
