Academic profile

Steffen Strese is Professor of Innovation Management at TU Dortmund University since April 2019. He studied business administration at the University of Cologne (Germany) and ESADE Barcelona (Spain). He received his doctoral degree from RWTH Aachen University (Germany) where his research focused on business model design. Since 2014/15, he has been a postdoc and Assistant Professor at the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Group (WIN) – TIME Research Area of RWTH Aachen University. In his international teaching activities as a visiting scholar, he conducted courses for bachelor/master students and in the executive education at universities and institutions such as Chulalongkorn University (Bangkog, Thailand), RWTH Business School (Aachen, Germany), or Tsinghua University (Beijing, China). In externally funded projects (e.g. EU, BMWi), he cooperates with interdisciplinary and international research institutes as well as with corporate partners.

 

Professional experience

As a consultant and project team leader at Bain & Company in Düsseldorf, Germany, he had been a member and leader of various consulting projects focusing on topics such as innovation management redesign, operational performance improvement, or strategy development and implementation. He conducted projects in large corporations across Europe and in a variety of industries (e.g., telecommunications, high-tech/IT, financial services). Moreover, he is co-founder of a technology-based start-up and has advised and supported numerous spin-offs and start-ups.

 

Research focus

His research covers a range of topics related to established firms and start-ups in the following areas:

  • Innovation management
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Business model innovation

Using large-scale data, he is currently engaged in empirical studies, for example, on the influence of the top management team on innovation strategies and entrepreneurial decisions (e.g., corporate venture capital). He is also exploring the digitization of innovation processes. This includes research on how digitization can be successfully employed in new product development or in innovate business models.
